This day marks the beginning of the season of Lent. It is a time of solemnity and repentance. It marks 40 days (not counting Sundays) before our Easter celebration. Traditionally many churches put ashes on the foreheads of those who desire to visibly mark the beginning of this season of sorrow over sin.
